Lectures

Week 1
For the first week no class was held, instead we were given materials like youtube video, e-books, and case studies in google classroom to be read and watched as an introduction and reference to the module. We were introduced to adobe illustrator which is the main software to be used later on in class. Personally I found the e-book titled "Framed Ink," very fascinating and inspiring as it provides a lot of character designs.

Week 2
We were told to watch a lecture given in google classroom before the class was held. This lecture introduce us on how to use several tools in Adobe Illustrator. We were given 8 different shapes to be traced as a practice, this 8 shapes will also be used later on for the vormator challenge. Here is my attempt at tracing the shapes.

In class we were also introduced to the bezier game which is a great and fun way for us to learn and get used to the pen tool.

Week 3
Shape builder is a tool to combine and subtract shapes, and path finder is a tool to manipulate and separate shapes from existing ones. This tool will be useful to make unique shapes for our vormator challenge and also create shadows and highlights.

Characters are usually categorized into 3 shapes (circle, square, and triangular).
  • Circle: cute, soft, usually the sidekicks
  • Square: strong, powerful, usually the main character
  • Triangular: mysterious, sinister, usually the villain

Task 1: Vormator Challange

In this task we are provided with 8 basics shape to be use to make a creature like pokemon. We could only use this 8 shapes and aren't allowed to distort them.

Research and Ideation

For this task I went to google and pinterest to find reference and ideas. I wanted my creature to be a villain, I want the charcter to have a triangular shape as it's supposed to look evil and mysterious it to be a mix of a snake and a gorilla of some sort. Below are the reference I got and the sketch that I made.

Digitalization

I first start by working from it's base to get the character into it's overall shape. Then, I started working on the details of it's face.

I realized that the arms seems off, so I changed it and also add more details and colors into the character.

Backstory:
Chared is a demon, he is one of the ruler of hell. He is half snake as snake symbolizes the fallen angel, his master, who tricked Adam and Eve into sin. His face was burned off from his own flames leaving only his bare skull, half of his body is made of charcoal to fuel his flames. His job is to punish sinners, however for him everyone is a sinner. So he burst his flames to anyone that comes in his way. Punishing everyone with his flame is his joy and passion.

Rationale

In week 2 I learned to use the pen tool, I also learned on how to use the rotate tool properly by asking Sir. Hafiz. At that time I didn't know how to change it's path when rotating an object, now I know that we need to press alt to select it's path of rotation.

In week 3 we are introduced to pathfinder and shape builder which help me create shadows for the character. I also use gradient for some parts to make the character looks more alive. Below are the process on how I used it.

Figure 2.6 (shape builder and pathfinder for tail shadows)

By looking at Sir. Hafiz's demonstration I also learnt that we could bring forward or bring backwards objects within the same layers. I used to make a lot of layers just to bring objects in front or behind.

Reflections

Experience:
When I first entered the class I was excited to learn more about adobe illustrator, as it's a new application in which I'm not familiar with. I am very curios and eager to learn more about the application.

Observations:
Overall I am satisfied with my character, however I fill like I could make a more complex one where the character looks nothing like the vormator shapes given.

Findings:
I find it hard to use pathfinder and shape builder to make a specific shape that I want. Sometimes some shapes are on top of another as it's on another layer and I find it hard to rearrange this shape to the correct order.

Events

Figure 2.1 (The Show)

On October 2 2024, students of the design program were all invited to The Graduate Showcase that took place on October 5-6 in Atrium, The Starhill, Bukit Bintang . The Graduate Showcase is an event where works of our seniors was displayed. This event also includes fashion shows, dance performances and also a mural art competitions in which we were encourage to join.

There were a lot of senior's artworks in various specialization such as UI/UX, entertainment design, graphic design, and many more. I admire all the works showcased however below are my favorites.

My classmates and I also joined the mural competition that was held the next day. We were given a theme, "Unity in Diversity," and two A2 papers to be combined into a mural. Although we didn't end up winning, we gained a lot of experience and had a lot of fun along the way.
