Lectures

In this lecture we were introduced to double exposure and color theory. One in particular that sparks my interest are the use of complementary colors. I usually use complementary colors in order to replace black as a shadow when doing digital art. Complementary colors are also a unique blend that makes an interesting visual.

The lecture also explains split-complementary color, which is something new for me. Split-complementary color is the use of either side of the complementary color, giving a total of 3 colors.

Practical

Project 2A: Double Exposure - PART 1

In this exercise we were given a video tutorial to follow. First I inserted the image and create a masking layer. Then I add curve adjustment layer, edit it, and clip it to the portrait layer.

Fig 1.1 (masking layer and adjustment layer), (week 7, 04/11/2024)

Then insert the picture of a forest provided (clip the layer to the portrait), create a solid layer (from adjustment layer) and use the eye dropper tool to add the same color of the forest background to the solid layer.

Using the brush tool go to the portrait mask and reveal the face, make sure to decrease the flow of the brush to make a smooth transition. After that, copy the layer and use the transform tool to flip it vertically, then delete the unwanted part using eraser tool.

Next, add the pictures of birds provided and apply darken (in the filter layers). Then, add the picture of a cloud provided, copy it, flip it vertically and distort it.

Finally add levels, adjust it, and add a gradient map, and choose the preset gradient.

FINAL WORK

Project 2A: Double Exposure - PART 2

To make this task I needed a to take a picture of myself and also search up some images on google and pinterest. Below are all the images that I used in order to make my double exposure foto.

Fig 2.7 (pictures used), (week 7, 06/11/2024)

First, I made a mask and then clipped the cityscape picture to it, I also added lighten filter to cityscape.

Fig 2.8 ( clipping and masking), (week 7, 06/11/2024)

After that, I added the forest picture, create another layer mask and edit them using the brush tool to make the trees blend in with my face. I also create a solid layer fill for the background and played with the curves to add highlights and shadow of my picture.

Fig 2.9 (blending the forest), (week 7, 06/11/2024)

Next, I decreased the saturation and make the cityscape blend in with the background. I also realized that the transition between the trees and cityscape isn't smooth, so I duplicate the cityscape, rotate it and blend it again with the trees.

Fig 2.10 (process work), (week 7, 06/11/2024)

I also added sun ray effects, applied screen filter and blend it with the rest of the image. Finally I added birds to the picture and applied darken filter to it. Shown below are the adjustments I made to the layers.

Reflections

For the first part of this task I was able to follow through the instructions given, however when I was doing the second part of the project, where I need to make my own double exposure I was quite confuse.
I didn't remember what I did in the first part, it was like I was following the instructions without knowing what each step actually do to the image. So I went back and forth understanding each step one by one in order to make my own double exposure.
