Project 2

In this task there are several brief that we could pick, shown below are all the brief available.

Fig 1.1, Briefs, (week 7, 08/11/2025)

This task requires us to make a group, shown below is the list of my group which consist of 5 members.
  1. Anggia Tsani Rachmadayanti (0368487)
  2. Angelique Svetlana Pekasa (0377365)
  3. Valerius Ethan Wirawan (0372774)
  4. Maria Ashley Sundoko (0372793)
  5. Caitlin Ong Lynn Dee (0343801)
As a group we decided to do project 1 brief, and at first we did our own separate research before class. This research was still rough as we didn't meet yet as a team. Shown below is the document for our individual research.

Fig 1.2, Initial research (week 7, 09/11/2025)

After week 8 feedback we did more exploration and Ideation, we finalize our visual direction into that of retro/futuristic and our specific target audience, into teenager's streetwear. Shown below is the mood board that we came up with in class alongside our exploration.

After the ideation and mood board we did exploration on our logo, and upon feedback we decided on our finalized logo. Each of us contribute on making the sketches for the logo, combining our ideas to make the finalized logo. Shown below are the sketches along with the finalized logo.

We also did a finalized sketch for our box packaging and also decided to take a photo of our product to use it for the front cover of our packaging, as it is essential to show the real product without needing for the customer to open the box as our packaging doesn't have seen-trough materials like plastic as it will make the packaging look cheap. We took our team member's headphone to be used as our product.

Then we also did the dieline for the box packaging,. We took measurements for of the headphones in order to make an accurate dieline.

Fig 1.9, Headphone measurements, (week 9)

Shown below was the initial dieline. The initial dieline was made with curated cardboard in mind.

Fig 1.9, Initial dieline, (week 9)

After some discussion, we made huge revisions on the dieline, as magnets will be involved we decide to make 2 parts of the outside rigid box. In addition to that, we will use sticker paper to print the visuals on it and stick it to the box, so several dielines was made for the sticker paper and also the foam used for the tray inside the box.

Along the process, we also decide to change the base of our box into a square of 240mm x 240mm with a flap of 30mm.

After finishing up with the dieline we finished our manual to be put into the booklet. Shown below is the pdf of it.

Fig 1.12, Manual booklet, (week 9)

We then move on to the main visuals for the packaging. Using our final dieline as the guide and measurements for it. Shown below are the graphic elements that we use for the background.

Fig 1.13, Graphic elements, (week 9)

Then we began our initial design, shown below is the design that we made for the outer packaging and also the envelope in which we will put the manual in.

After consultation, we decided to make a some adjustments on the graphic elements used, the intensity of the blur, drop shadow, fonts and etc. Shown below are the notes of the consultation.

Fig 1.16, Consultation notes, (week 9)

In addition to that, we decided to have a major change in the gradient of the background. We decided to make things a little darker with an addition of gaussian blur and noise. We also change the gradient of the envelope and the intensity of the blur in order to match our outer packaging design.

Fig 1.16, Consultation notes, (week 9)

Shown below is the final design made, there are spaces in between as we keep in mind that there will be spaces for the rigid box to be fold. We also provide a bigger background in order to make sufficient space for the bleed during the printing process.

On week 10, all of our design was finalized. Before going to print our rigid box we made a mockup cardboard to visualize our idea better and get a better look on how our product will look like.

Fig 1.18, Box mockup, (week 10)

We also print our user manual booklet in A5 size. We did a total of 2 trials for the manual booklet, as the first one was printed in color, however the results wasn't satisfactory as there are unwanted lines and unwanted difference between gradients of black and white. In addition to that, we made a mistake in the printing itself as the document set up wasn't in the right order for the type of printing that we want.

After printing the manual booklet, we went to mummy design in order to make the rigid box and print our design in it. We also brought foam in order to make the inner tray.

After a few days, Mummy finished printing our box and also the envelope. We then get together again to see the results and piece together the envelope to the box.

Shown below are the photos of the final box packaging along side the envelope with the user manual in it. There were small printing faults that was made, however it is barely noticeable.

After that we inserted the cutted foam board into the box, manually spray painted it to make it black, and glue it to make it stay.

Feedback

Week 8

After consultation, Mr. Shamsul suggested that we decide on a more specific target audience, this will help make our ideation become more define and not too broad. So as a group we decided to specifically target teenagers particularly focusing on the streetwear direction of it. We also finalize out visual direction to retro/futuristic. Mr. Shamsul also suggest the logo to not be too decorative, and simplify the logo, keep the sharp edges of the current design.

Week 9

Mr. Shamsul suggest that we make sharp edges for our logo's typography, later for the elements we need to blur it out with a gradient and Gaussian blur to appear more neat and blended, while the shape should represent music-related elements more. And the last note was to have consistency with the chosen typeface.

For the systematics of the box, he suggested to have a half-circle cut at the edge to help lift our layered packaging between the headphone and the charger, and to use a foam material for it.

Week 10

Our mockup trial was approved, to improve further and achieve the best possible outcome, it is suggested to professionally print the visual design in the chosen box material and for the tray and foam to ensure security of the product need to use high density foam material.

Reflections

To be honest, doing this task was a bit overwhelming at first. We were rushing up with other assignments deadline that we postponed this project for a bit. However at the end of the day, we managed to finish everything right on time with maximum effort. This task requires us to work a lot as a team and help each other, and I think we greatly managed to do so. I am appreciate my team mates very much as we all give our best towards this module and we were also able to understand each other, make time for group meetings and completion of this task although we all have to finish all our different individual task with other modules.

In addition to that, this project gives me a real and hands on experience on packaging design, as this project requires us to make a real packaging for the headphones. During the printing process we spent a total of 6 hours in the printing shop, talking to the stuff there, and going back and forth with our final design in order to make sure that everything goes well. On that day all of our patience was tested. And on that day we also realized how expensive it is to make a printed rigid box.

Overall this project is an interesting experience, we've got to collaborate, work, and discuss with each other in order to make the final box packaging. In addition to that we also learned the behind-the-scenes knowledge required to print our design to the box, such as precise die lines, bleeds, and additional measurements required from the printing store. This project have surely increased my knowledge, patience, and my teamwork skills.
