Week 8 (self-directed learning, no classes was held)

Week 9

In this lecture we were introduced to digital surrealism, and surrealism in general. With this lecture I understood that Surrealism looks real, however it defies logic, so it can't be real. Surrealism is a twist on realism, where we distort reality into a dream like state.

Practical

Research about your topic
For this project I went to Pinterest and Instagram to search up some movie posters and other poster for my mood board and reference, below are 3 major ones that I used.

Fig 2.1 (Mood board/reference), (week 7, 5/11/2024)

I also go with the quote "Leave your past behind," A lot of people tends to be stuck in their past, which might be filled with regrets, guilt, or shame. With this quote I want to encourage people to move on, move forward and leave their past behind as there will be a brighter future ahead of them.

Define your concept

Start to develop your poster
For this project we were required to use our own pictures that we took, so I used some pictures from my last trip to Bali for the background and Europe for the mountains. In addition to that I also took a picture of myself with a tripod in a football field in front of my house, back when I was home in Cirebon, Indonesia, for the self-directed learning week.

Fig 2.3 (Raw pictures used), (week 8, 12/11/2024)

I realized that the picture of myself is too centered, so I expand the picture to the left by selecting the right part > press control T > expand it to the right. Below is the before and after picture.

Fig 2.4 (Expanding picture), (week 9, 18/11/2024)

Then I clipped myself, copy it, and adjust it to the right perspective. I then repeat the process for the mountains in the background and added the image of the sky.

Fig 2.5 (Process work), (week 9, 18/11/2024)

I felt like the sky is too much of a contrast with the grass field and the mountains. So I used gradient fill instead. I also imported my work on illustrator into photoshop and refine/edit it to merge in with the rest of the poster. Below is the process on how I do it.

Fig 2.6 (Process work), (week 9, 20/11/2024)

After that I added details by adding graphic elements I found in Pinterest and edit it to the poster. I also added a texture to the entire poster by adding a vintage filter on top of everything and decrease it's opacity.

After showing my work to Sir. Fauzi, I was given feedback that the word "BEHIND" might be a little hard to read. This feedback is in contrast with Sir. Hazis who recommend be to put the word "BEHIND" in the back of everything else. So Sir. Fauzi propose to give 2 final works, 1 for DPI and 1 for IVN. Above is the poster given for IVN, while below is the final poster for DPI.

Reflections

Overall, I really enjoyed doing this project. Once I get the hang of how to use clipping masks, filters, and adjustment layers it becomes easier. I really liked that we were given freedom on how we should go around this project. This freedom makes me enjoy making the poster even more as I could explore and express my creativity.
