Task 4: Exercises

Table of contents

Week 10
We were briefed on the assignment given

Week 11
In this week I learn that not all written in the story should be shown in the comic, there can be part's that don't need to be drawn out to let the readers fill in the blank themselves, this lets the readers think and become more engaged to the comic. This could be called the law of closure. In this lecture Sir. Hazis also tells about the types of transitions. There are a total of 5 types of transition that we could use shown below.

Week 12
We were given an online lecture on transitions and we were told that we don't need to translate the parts of the novel word by word.

Week 13
We had a face to face class where each of us were given feedback on our work.

Task 4: Webcomic

For this task we were assigned to make a comic from the short story "The Monkey's Paw" alongside the cover for the comic. We were told to pick a scene from that story and make it into a comic with minimum 3 panels. The comic should be made in a surrealistic style.

Research and Ideation

For this task, I wanted my work to be both "cartoony" and "realistic" at the same time. So I wanted both elements to be in my comic.

For the poster I am heavily inspired by The Sandman comics. I wanted my poster to focus more onto how the monkey's paw effect the person and it's origins.

And for the comic itself, I reference the American comics for layout and reference Japanese mangas for the style. I also use adobe's renaissance color palette for the coloring.

Digitalization

First I imported my sketch into illustrator and then I used blob brush tool to make an outline. I make different layers for each panel and then differentiate the layers for the outline, shadow and color.

After that I switched to photoshop to make the final touches. I used oil texture as the background to make the comic more surrealist as it both have elements of the cartoon world and the real world. On top of that I wanted the room to feel like a prison and oil texture does a great job at doing so.

In this stage I felt like the room looks too simple and too prison like, so I added doors and windows to it. I outline them using pressured brush to have a cartoon feeling into it, however I used textured images to color it, to make it surrealist.

Then I moved on to making the poster. In this poster I also used blob brush tool to outline my sketch and color it. On top of that I used a couple of different tools again such as image trace. Below is the process on how I do so.

Next I went back to photoshop to make the title and added some final touches. Attached below are the steps I took.

Animation

After finishing my poster and comic, I proceed to make the animation. I used illustrator to make the artboard and then import it to photoshop.

Fig 2.9, (Calendar GIF), (week 13, 27/12/2024)

Then I repeated this process for the animation in panel 3 and 5. At this stage I also figured out that we could change frame by frame animation into video animation. So I change it back and forth to get a better view of it.

Fig 2.12, (Panel 5 GIF), (week 13, 30/12/2024)

After that I wanted to try animating the calendar in a different way. I animate it by a method called tweening or keyframing.

Fig 2.14, (calendar animation with tweening), (week 13, 01/12/2024)

The calendar animation looks smoother with this method, however it only uses 1 artboard so for the final animation I go back to the original method.

RATIONALE

Reflections

Experience

In this task I was first very confuse on how I should make the comic. I only knew how to use the pen tool in illustrator, and from task 2, I learned that using pen tool could take a long time, on top of that by using pen tool I couldn't make the style I want to achieve for this comic. So I search on Youtube for alternative ways to do so and ended up using blob brush tool, which is very effective for me. I also learned how to use image trace and how to edit back and forth in photoshop and illustrator.

Observation

With this task I observe that there illustrator is actually very useful and there are a lot of tools that I haven't learned yet. By using blob brush tool, I could make drawings that becomes vector images and by using image trace I could turn jpeg into vectors.

Findings

I find out that we could import images into illustrator and then use image trace to render it into a vector layer. On top of that I find out that we could use textures into that layer, use photoshop to edit out the unwanted backgrounds and import the image back to illustrator to modify it. I also found out many ways to animate using both illustrator and photoshop,
