Week 3: Visual analysis
Visual analysis is a way to understand a design which focus on visual elements and principles. With visual analysis a design is broken down to parts in order to understand the reasoning behind why the designer made it in that specific way. Visual analysis could be divided into 3 phase:

Observation, which is when we describe the design that our eyes can see in extreme details. In this phase we are not allowed to read anything about the design, we should focus on  looking, thinking, and finding good language.

Analysis, which is when we look at the observation and break it down again by analyzing the design principles within it.

Interpretation, which is the fusion of observation, analysis, along side background facts about the design work. The background facts could cover the history, purpose or meaning behind the design work.

Task 2: Visual Analysis & Ideation

Visual analysis:
From the previous task I choose a poster for the movie "Memento", designed by a group of artist under Newmarket Films.

Fig 1.1, Memento poster,

Memento Movie poster
Artist: Newmarket Films
Year: 2000
Medium: Digital print
Size: 27" x 39.5"

Observation:

The poster in Fig 2.1 is made in a portrait format. It contains 2 main pictures that is shown in a polaroid, that is repeatedly getting smaller and smaller until the viewer's eyes can't see. The first picture, the biggest one, seems to have a guy looking at towards the right while the secondary picture seems to have a women looking directly towards the viewers. And as for visual elements, the poster contains a movie title written in a unique typography at the bottom of the poster. In addition to that the poster contains several negative spaces which is colored in solid black.

Analysis:

This poster also uses several design principles including repetition, the poster repeats a polaroid picture, however it doesn't forget to use variety in it, as it switches between 2 different pictures every time. The use of repetition on the poster also replicates Christopher Nolan’s, the director, take on the movie. On top of that, it also uses word and image, the poster contains images of the movie which sets a mystery/thriller tone and an overall theme of it, it is also combined with the title                 "Memento" using a hand written looking font which helps to increase it's mystery tone.
The poster also uses rule of thirds, when the poster is divided into 3 equal spaces both horizontally and vertically the main image is set at the top left intersection of the grid. Lastly, this poster uses hierarchy, the most important information, which is the movie title have the largest font as it is the first thing people see. After that people will see the secondary information which is the list of main actors and actress on top of it.

Interpretation:

This poster is made for a movie titled "Memento" in the year 2000. "Memento" is a movie that have a thriller/mystery genre, with a plot twist attached to it. The movie is about a guy who have anterograde amnesia who uses polaroids, notes, and tattoos to find the person who murdered his wife in order to revenge her.
The poster uses polaroids as it is one of the ways he could remember what he is doing. The use of repetition of the polaroids also foreshadows how the timeline of the movie is made backwards, where the movie starts at the climax and slowly reveals the story from the end to the beginning. The poster also sets a warm tone with the color of orange, this is one of Christopher Nolan's, the director's, signature as most of his movie poster are set in a warm tone with the color orange or cold tone with the color blue.

Sketches and Rationale:

Sketch 1:

Fig 2.1, Sketch 1 ver1, (22/02/2025)

Fig 2.2, Sketch 1 ver2, (22/02/2025)

Rationale:

In this sketch (Fig 2.2) I used mainly 3 designs principles which are emphasiswords and image, and repetition. My first idea is to showcase 3 actors in the movie, however the main actor stands out the most. I do this by making him the center of attention and put 2 of the other supporting characters beside him inside of a polaroid (emphasis). I also make use of a lot of broken/burned polaroids (repetition) to showcase some scenes from the movie in order to build curiosity of the viewers. The sketch also contains words and image as images will be taken from the movie and unique fonts will be used for the title and captions.

Sketch 2:
Fig 2.3, Sketch 2, (22/02/2025)

Rationale:
In this second sketch (Fig 2.3) I also used emphasis, words and image, and repetition. This sketch have more emphasis as it only showcase the main character. For my second sketch I wanted to play around with polaroids, the entire poster is made to resemble an actual polaroid and in it lies the main character that is made of half polaroid scattered around his face and body (repetition). The entire poster were made damaged and burned a bit with blood dripping on it, this is to add suspense in the poster. The sketch also contains words and image as images will be taken from the movie and unique fonts will be used for the title and captions.

Sketch 3:

Fig 2.4, Sketch 3, (22/02/2025)

Rationale:
In the last sketch (Fig 2.4) I also used words and image and repetition like the sketches before, however I didn't use emphasis, instead wanted to use the rule of thirds to create another take on the composition. When the poster is dived into 3 lines equally (rule of thirds), all characters in it lies on the point of intersection of those lines. In addition to that the title of the poster is also placed on one of the lines.

Feedback

Week 4:
In the interpretation, write a brief summary of the movie. Make the words "Observation", "Analysis", and "Interpretation" in bold to make it easier to be read. For the rationale of the sketches make sure to mention the design principles that are used.
