Instructions
Project 1
In this project we were tasked to create a label for a kombucha drink
made from a company called "Uncle Jeff's Kombucha" that is shelf-ready,
distinctive, and clearly communicates the product's local authenticity,
artisanal quality, and unique flavoring to the intended consumer.
Label size:
Large bottle: height 9.5cm × width 18.5cm
Label size:
Large bottle: height 9.5cm × width 18.5cm
Small bottle: height 6cm x width 14.5 cm
As we were given the freedom to choose which flavor of kombucha to redesign, I choose to use the lemon ginger flavor. I choose this as the illustration doesn't shows ginger at all, and this might lead to a lot of confusion, the packaging might be a bit misleading as only elements of lemons were shown.
For this task my original design was to make a label that's both rustic and
playful. I wanted the fun and playful theme of the original design to stay
in my label. Shown below were the reference that took from pinterest along side my
sketch.
However after feedback (refer to week 6 feedback) I decided to just go with
rustic instead. I feel like rustic themes suit the target market (young
adults) better as rustic themes convey how it's home made and natural, in addition to that a rustic design for a kombucha drink will make it stands out against the rest when it's put in shelfs. Shown below are the new visual references along with the
sketches that I made.

After that I began to transfer my sketch into adobe Illustrator layer by layer, starting with the outlines and looking for the right typeface which suits the design.
I decided to go with a mix of regular and italic
Helvetica for the nutrition facts and most of the information there. For the
middle (main) section, I decided to go with a sans-serif typeface called
Lemon Milk that I got from Dafont.
And for the right side I decided to go with PineFolk font.

After feedback session (Week 7 feedback), I made several adjustment to the initial design as it wasn't rustic enough. I changed the look of the main page and also the width of the lines on the right side of the design label.
When I finished with the large bottle, I readjust the size for the smaller bottle, the font needs to be decreased and the spacings for the elements needs a lot of adjusting. Shown below are the adjustings made for the outlines.
Shown below are the final out come along with the mockup.

Feedback
Week 6:
- Specific feedback: The sketch integrates 2 different themes, rustic and playful, and sometimes 2 themes doesn't collide goodly. Sometimes just sticking with 1 is a better option, right now there are too many things going on.
- Specific feedback (teams): Go with sketch number 3 however take the size of the template into consideration, its better to stick with the template.
Week 7:
- General feedback:
- Specific feedback: The design right now isn't too rustic, give a more rustic theme to it by changing the frame and changing the looks of "LEMON GINGER" by making the rectangle slanted. The Kombucha shouldn't be put in the sides as it needs to be in the center as it's important. The borders at the right side should also have a consistent weight. Don't outline the words on the right side, just rotate it so it will be easier.
Reflections
When I was firstly briefed about this task, I was very confuse. I
never designed for a packaging before, so all of this is new to me, I
didn't know what to do and how to design for one. However from the
first feedback that I gained from my sketch, I began to understand
what I did wrong and why my initial sketch was off. I realized that
too many elements comes into play, initially I wanted to have a
combination of 2 themes, rustic and fun, and through the feedback
session I realized that it's better to stick and focus to just 1 theme
as it becomes too distracting.
After getting this feedback I get a picture on how my design direction should go and I gain more insights on how to make a better overall label design. Through this task I learned how important placements of information are, and how hierarchy should be applied to highlight important information. Overall, I find this task very interesting, I learned a lot of new things on design and it's application to the real world.
