Exercises
Exercise 1: Quantify & visualize data
In this exercise we were tasked to choose objects and arrange it into a presentable layout or chart. I decided to go with foreign coins as I could divided arrange it into several groups: Countries, Old & New, Gold & Silver, and Value.
Shown below is my first draft for the poster. In this poster I used coins from Malaysia and Singapore.
Fig. 1.1, First Draft, (Week 1)
I also added coins from Thailand and Indonesia which I borrowed from my friends in exchange for the Singaporean coins as I only have 4 pieces of Singaporean coins.
Poster Redesign
In the same week we were also tasked to redesign a bad infographics in Canva. Shown below is the bad infographics which I chose.
Fig. 1.5, Bad Infographic, (Week 1)
The infographic was bad as it wasn't aesthetic and the information was unclear. So I went to Canva redesigned it.
In it, I made clear of 3 different types of information, the company's name (Papa John's), the timeline of their executives over the years, and the total tenure comparison. Shown below is the final poster made.

Exercise 2: LATCH
In this task we were assigned to Organize a group of information into a visual poster that combined and utilizes the LATCH principles (min. 4):
Location / Alphabet / Time / Category / Hierarchy
Sir. Kannan suggested a few topics, shown below:
- Pokedex: https://pokemondb.net/pokedex/
- FFXIV Bestiary: https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Category:Bestiary
- Dinosaurs: https://www.mainstreetsmiles.com/fun-stuff/teeth-25-dinosaurs-prehistoric-creatures/
For this assignment, I choose to go with pokemon, since I am a bit familiar with it. I decided to use:
- location (the place where the pokemon lives)
- time ( the generation of the pokemon)
- category (the type of pokemon)
- hierarchy (the evolution of the pokemon)
I went to pinterest in order to find some infpirations and reference, shown below are some of the reference that I took.
Fig. 1.8, references, (Week 2)
Fig. 1.9, fonts choices, (Week 2)
After looking at some, I decided to go with the font "Pix32" which is shown below.
After deciding the principles I want to use along with taking some references, I started to work on it. My idea was to make a more modern version of the poster, pokemon can be played across different gaming consoles across different generations. And for this assignment, I want to make a more relevent poster by using a nintendo switch as the base because it is the most recent and updated gaming console to play pokemon on.
Shown below is the rough sketch that I did on Procreate, in order to get the general Idea on how the poster is going to be.
After that, I started to work on Illustrator, shown below is the the process.
Fig. 1.13, Process work, (Week 3)
After consultation, I revised the poster, I changed the outline colors of the cloud and added a bit of additional information. Shown below is the final poster made.

Feedback
Week 1: Make sure that you could arrange it into minimum 3 different types of groups, in order to make the data interesting.
Week 2: The Data right now is not good to look at, it's correct but too messy, also the amount of items is too little. You could add more foreign coins. And for the LATCH assignment, make sure to use a minimum of 4 different principles.
Week 3: For LATCH poster, the clouds in the posters are too loud, change the borders of the cloud so that it isn't black. By it being black, it will distract the viewer's eyes towards the cloud instead of the main information. In addition to that,
Reflections
On the first exercise, I actually struggled a bit. I felt like my vision was quite limited, as I have limited amount of coins present, I felt like I couldn't divide it into different kinds of group. And after the consultation I felt like my mind was opened up, the answer was simple, just add more kinds of coins. So I went to ask some friends if they had foreign coins, and after that, I added 2 more kinds of foreign coins to the list (Indonesian coins and Thailand coins). After that the poster was more filled, and the groupings became more various.
On the additional exercise of poster redesign, I was a bit confuse on which direction I want to go to, as the initial poster was a unclear, it showed 2 different kinds of information in a pie chart (it shows both timeline and the total tenure comparison in a pie chart), so to solve it I divide the information and made both a timeline and a pie chart that is way easier to read and visually pleasing. I also added "Papa John's" logo and some more information so that the viewer have context on what they are reading.
For the LATCH poster, I learned a lot after the feedback session. During the feedback session Mr. Kannan told me about the use of the color black, and how strong it is that i distracts the viewr's eyes. The use of the black strokes on the cloud redirect the viewer's eye and highlight the cloud instead of the main componenent, which in this case is the nintendo switch. And just by chanigng the color of thecloud stroke, my poster changes drasticly.
