Exercises

For the final project, we were asked to make partners for the animation. For this I partnered up with Jada ( JADA KYRA BINTI MOHD KHALID RASHAD, 380336). On week 6 we consulted on our posters, and Sir. Kannan choose my poster to make it as an animation. Shown below is the final poster used for the animation.

After that I started to look at some youtube videos in order to find inspirations and understand what the final outcome should be like. Listed below are some of the animation that I look up to for reference.

After that Jada started to make the storyboard in order to keep our vision the same, and so that none of use gets on a different paths. Shown below is the storyboard made.

We divided our task by the number of steps, there are a total of 8 steps in phase one and 4 steps in phase 2. So in total there are 12 steps, I will do the first 8 steps (Phase 1) including the title and ingredients, while Jada will do the last 4 steps (phase 2). I then drew a timeline to estimate the time of the entire video shown below.

Fig. 1.5, Timeline, (Week 6)

I also edited the storyboard with estimate timings. Shown below is the storyboard with timings, I made it a total of 51s so there are 9s to spare as the maximum is 60s.

Then an animatic was made in order to show how the outcome should be. Shown below is the animatic made.

I started my work by organizing my illustrator file. I divided all the tools and ingredients into different layers so that it is ready to be edited separately later on in After effect.

Fig. 1.9, Process work, (Week 7)

I also made new illustrations for the egg, as in one of the scene there will be an egg cracking, So I made an illustration for the egg as a whole, the top part of egg that was cracked and the bottom part. Shown below is the additional illustrations made.

Fig. 1.10, Process work, (Week 7)

After that I went to after effect in order to start my animation process. In this blog I'm going to explain how I animate from start to finish by each storyboard. For the first part, the title I made each letter of the title "Tagliatelle" jumps 2 times. For this I separate each of the letter and animate it one by one (instead of animating it as a whole word). Shown below is the screen grab oh how I do so.

Fig. 1.11, Process work, (Week 7)

Then, I animate the ingredients part. For this I made the objects appear by changing the position and animating with easy ease. I also used shapes for the lines and animate it's position. Shown below is the progress.

Fig. 1.12, Process work, (Week 7)

After that, I animate the transition from the flour bag into the flour that's already opened and readyt to be used. For this, I make the layer 3D and changed the Y rotation of both the flour bag and the new flour and play with the opacity, decreasing the opacity of the flour bag while increasing the opacity of the new one. Shown below is the process.

Fig. 1.13, Process work, (Week 7)

This process is then repeated for the dough transition later on. Shown below is the process.

Fig. 1.14, Process work, (Week 7)

After that, I animated the egg cracking, I do so by importing the 3 diffrerent illustrations of the egg and animate it so it cracks smoothly, and for the egg white I animate it by making a shape using the pen tool and animate it right in after effect, shown below is the process.

Fig. 1.15, Process work, (Week 7)

Next, I animate the olive oil, the liquid coming out of the olive oil was animated using trim path shown below.

Fig. 1.16, Process work, (Week 7)

I also made 2 different layers for the dough, one with the original color, and the other with the yellowish color when some ingredients were added. I made this transition by decreasing the opacity of one while increasing the other. Shown below is the process.

Fig. 1.17, Process work, (Week 7)

Then, I used position to make the wooden roll enter and move up and down and scale to increase the size of the dough,
Fig. 1.18, Process work, (Week 7)

After that comes the complicated part. The dough was folded using the effect CC Page turn and then  the dough was cutted. To make the illusion of a cut I made rectangles using the same color of the background and make it appear according to the movement of the knife. And then these rectangle was masked to the original dough. Then I animated the unfolding of the dough using the same CC Page turn effect.

Fig. 1.19, Process work, (Week 7)

Then I made a null layer and link the dough, pot, and the rectangle layers into the null layer. I then changed the scale and position of it accordingly to make the pasta zoom out and fall into the pot

Fig. 1.20, Process work, (Week 7)

Lastly, I zoomed in a bit on the pot and position the salt along with the clock. Then, I dropped the pot and made the pasta stay while the plate went up for the ending.

Fig. 1.21, Process work, (Week 7)

Shown below is the animation that I did before the final consultation.

After consultation I made some changes, one of the changes made is how I make the egg falls into the flour. I do this by duplicating the flour layer, bringing the layer above the egg layer and masking the new layer. Shown below is the screengrab of the process,

Fig. 1.22, Process work, (Week 7)

Shown below is the final video of my part of the project.

I then combined my video with Jada's video. Shown below is the final combined video.

Feedback

Week 7: For the animation transition from the flour bag into the flour don't use morphing, it looks a bit off, try changing the Y axis instead, make it 3D, so it spins while changing. For the ingredients list it is way too fast right now, make it stay a bit longer, and for the exit of the ingredients make it jump out just like how it jumps in.

Final Consultation: For the title, make the second jump smaller, don't make it the same as the first jump, and make the "by: pasta grannies" appear during/after the second jump. Make the word "our" smaller. Don't need to scale a bit up when bringing the flour in front after the ingredients list. Make the spin a bit faster from the flour bag into the flour. Can try introducing a new color for the text. Make the egg white like it falls into the flour instead of decreasing the opacity. Make the olive oil liquid fall from the bottom of the bottle instead of the top. Make the transition from the flour into the dough spinning 3D just like the transition beforehand. Delete the outline of the wooden roll. Make the pasta enter the pot just like how the egg enters the flour. Make the timer a bit longer.

Reflections

In this final project I learned a lot, I learned the to pay attention to small details as it will have significant effect on the final results, I learned this by the feedback given each week. In addition to that this final project really makes my brain function a lot, as I need to think of different ways of doing things. For example, for the dough folding and cutting, I made the dough itself on After effect instead of illustrating it on illustrator, so the dough is a shape layer on After effect and I need to find ways to make it seems like the dough was cut, and I ended up doing it by adding rectangles with the same color as the background and masking it to the dough. The same goes for the flour, Sir. Kannan gave feedback on how the egg should enter the flour on the last consultation, and at that time I think that it will take a lot of time to go back to Illustrator and separate the illustrations of the flour and back again to After effects, so instead, I duplicate the flour layer and used masking.

Overall, this final project takes a lot of time, it makes my brain thinks a lot, but at the end of the day I really do learned a lot. It was a bit confusing at first, however after a while I started to get used to it and learned to enjoy the process.
