Task 2: Exercises

Table of contents

In this lecture we are introduced to adjustment layers and filters to be used in our digital collage. Mr. Fauzi told us that the most useful adjustment layers are levels, curves, and hue/saturation.

Fig 1.1 (filters), (week 4, 21/10/2024)

Notes:
levels adjustment have higher darker brightness/quality than contrast adjustment.
Use (Ctrl  + Alt + G) to apply adjustment only to the layer below it.
Don't edit the colors too much (just make it lighter/darker)

Tutorial

INSTRUCTION:

  1. Attach your best composition from WEEK 3 digital collage exercise below.

  2. Using the same Photoshop file, improvise your WEEK 3 digital collage into WEEK 4 by using Adjustment Layers & Filters on Photoshop.

  3. Explain what you’ve learned in the description section.

Practical: Digital collage

Best digital collage before editing of filters and adjustment layer.

Fig. 1.2 (best digital collage), (week 4, 21/10/2024)

DESCRIPTION:

For the person on the right I use a pen tool to cut it out of the original picture. Then for the black and white picture behind the person, I use the shape tool and use it to cut it into a circle. For the building in which the person is standing, I reduce its opacity to that of around 50%.

This composition is made to remind people to take a break in life and wonder for a bit. Let your imagination run wild for a while. Don’t let your imagination die or run out.

After using filters and adjustment layers.

Fig. 1.2 (after editing), (week 4, 21/10/2024)

DESCRIPTION:

For this final work, I used a lot of filters and adjustments, however for the adjustment I use it per layer, to make it more flexible and customizable. For the background and person I adjust the curves, for the building on the left and fishes (behind the black and white circle) I adjust the level, and for the plant I adjust the hue saturation. I also use subtract filter for the building on the bottom.

Reflections

During this task, we are task to use filters and adjustment layers and since this is my first time using them I find it interesting to discover each of them and the effects they have on the image. In this task I also discovered a lot of shortcuts to remember.

When Mr. Fauzi choose this picture as the best one I was actually confused as I don't really like this composition compare to the rest. However after a lot of editing I ended up liking it more than the others.
