Task 3

For the final project we were task to shoot a video with a minimum of 1 VFX inside it. The theme of the video is chosen by tarot cards, and for this project the chosen card is the judgement card. For the final project I teamed up with Samuel Keane, a classmate from the same BDCM course to make the video. Shown below is the PDF of the project proposal.

As one of the VFX we choose is super speed, I try to use the effect during one of our classes in week 10. First, I shot some clips of my classmate in my phone, and then began editing it in adobe after effect using the tutorial video written in the proposal. For this effect I used time stretch and force motion blur

Shown below is the final outcome of it.

After doing the trial run for the VFX, we started on the preproduction. Shown below is the storyboard for the video.

After making the storyboard, we started to shoot the scene, the setting of the shots were taken in my apartment's bedroom and in Samuel's apartment's bathroom. Here is the photo of the settings.

There was also a scene that was shot just outside my bedroom unit, shown below is the photo of it.

And for the props, we mainly used a desk lamp for the light source, some soju bottles, and a laptop.

All the shots were taken during night time when the sun already went down so that the only source of lightning will be the artificial light we used to maintain consistency between each shots. We did several takes on each scene, compare it between one another, and take the best out of it.

After that we began the editing process in adobe premier pro. First we compile all of our shots, edit the sounds and do color correction from one shot to another, to maintain consistency. Then we add an adjustment layer in order to color grade it

After that, I went to after effect to make the VFX for the last 2 shots. First I edited the superspeed VFX. I cut the video to the desired duration, and cut it into 3 parts. I used the forced motion blur in effects and presets to apply it in the video.

Then, my partner edit the other effect of fire in after effects. Shown below is the screen grab of the process.

Upon getting feedback from Mr. Martin, we changed the storyline of our video. We scraped the previous story, but we still used all the visuals from it. We changed the story, now the reporter is the only one that talks in the video, the reporter tells of the factory burning down and by the end of it a plot twist was added where the main character was actually the culprit of the factory out burst. Mr. Martin also suggest us to use AI for the reporter's voice over. Here is the website that I used: https://elevenlabs.io/.

Reflections

This final task was overall fun to do, I got to apply the different types of shots that I have learned for the previous tasks and also apply color correction and color gradings onto it. I liked how we were given the opportunity to work with a partner or alone, as for me, working with a partner makes the task way enjoyable as we could discuss and brainstorm as a team. Not only that I liked how we were also given the freedom to develop out own storyline according to the theme given and also use the VFX of our choice.

I also learned a lot from the feedbacks given from Mr. Martin. He has given a lot of insights on how tom make the story good and interesting. Our story have changed a total of 2 times upon receiving feedbacks from Mr. Martin. And because of this feedbacks I became really satisfied with the outcome of the final video.
