Reflections

Experience

This module allowed me to further develop and refine my dissertation through deeper exploration based on the previous Design Methodology module that I have. I revisit the same topic multiple times and did a deeper research to help me gain a clearer and more structured understanding, which allows me to make the dissertation to be more detailed and cohesive. Based on the feedbacks given I continuously refined the literature review, strengthened the objectivity of my visual and semiotic analyses, and justified the chosen mixed methods approach using academic sources.

The main difference for me this time, is working on the e-publication layout and cover design while managing on deadlines, it took me several tries and several weeks of feedback to get the cover design. It was a bit hard on me, and I tried to start as early as I could, as I know that my dissertation is quite lengthy and it requires a lot of time to design the layout.

Observation

I observed how important it is to make a good cover for the dissertation, as it represent the dissertation as a whole. The initial cover that I made was a bit boring, it plays around with typography and hierarchy, however it doesn't tell of the contents in the book (in this case action movie poster). And after several consultation regarding the cover, I finally reached a point in which Dr. Hayati and I was satisfied with the cover. The final cover contain a picture of batman representing one of the core components of the study while also communicating the action genre by using bold red colors as a blocking to the title of the dissertation.

Findings

I find that this module really highlights the importance of being structured in design research. By revisiting the previous module, I was able to identify areas for further development and clarification. Through this process, I gained a clearer understanding of how to extend my research into a dissertation, diving deeper into the methods used. The knowledge gained is directly applicable to my design work across other modules and personal projects, strengthening both my research and design approach. Overall, I really learned a lot through this module, especially surrounding time management.
