Exercises

Exercise 1: Kinetic Typography

This exercise requires us to work in a group again. We were tasked to make an animated lyric video of a chosen song. And during week 2, as a group, we chose what song to use, we all decided to go with Treasure by Bruno Mars. Shown below is the break down of the lyrics and the link to the original music video.

Verse 1
Give me your, give me your
Give me your attention, baby (attention, baby)
I got to tell you a little something about yourself (self)
You're wonderful, flawless, ooh, you're a sexy lady (sexy lady)
But you walk around here like you wanna be someone else (else)

Pre-Chorus
Oh, whoa
I know that you don't know it
But you're fine, so fine (fine, so fine)
Oh, whoa
Oh girl, I'm gonna show you
When you're mine, oh, mine (mine, oh, mine)

Chorus
Treasure, that is what you are
Honey, you're my golden star
You know you can make my wish come true
If you let me treasure you
If you let me treasure you, oh, oh, oh

Verse 1
Pretty girl, pretty girl, pretty girl
You should be smiling (you should be smiling)
A girl like you should never look so blue (blue)
You're everything I see in my dreams
I wouldn't say that to you if it wasn't true (true)

Pre-Chorus
Oh, whoa
I know that you don't know it
But you're fine, so fine (fine, so fine)
Oh, whoa
Oh girl, I'm gonna show you
When you're mine, oh, mine (mine, oh, mine)

Chorus
Treasure, that is what you are
Honey, you're my golden star
You know you can make my wish come true
If you let me treasure you
If you let me treasure you, oh, oh, oh

Tag
You are my treasure, you are my treasure
You are my treasure, yeah, you, you, you, you are
You are my treasure, you are my treasure
You are my treasure, yeah, you, you, you, you are

Ending
Treasure (you are my treasure)
That is what you are (you are my treasure, you are my treasure)
Honey, you're my golden star (you are, you are my treasure)
You know you can make (you are my treasure)
My wish come true (you are my treasure)
If you let me treasure you (you are, you are my treasure)
If you let me treasure you (you are my treasure), oh, oh, oh

After that we decided to divide each parts into each of our members. Shown below is the breakdown of the divided parts:

  • Verse 1: Jada
  • Pre-Chorus: Angie
  • Chorus: Eva
  • Verse 2: Adila
  • Tag: Liu Cheng Rui
  • Ending: An HongZheng
After diving the tasks, our leader, Jada, came up with the color palette based on the original music video. She also picked the fonts to be used, to maintain consistency in the video. Shown below is the color pallete and fonts that are maintained through out the video.

Fig. 1.1, Research process, (Week 4)

Then I went to youtube to find some inspirations, shown below is some youtube link that I went through, just to get an idea of what I would be doing.

The last link, is where I am drawn to the most, although the song was a lot faster, I feel like i could implement the style into the my part of the song. Shown below is the screen grab of the part that I drew inspiration from. (time stamp 1:02-1:05)

Fig. 1.2, Research process, (Week 4)

Shown below is my part that I need to edit. During this part of the music there were some slow parts, fast ones, and repeated ones. So my idea is to break it down into 3 different styles of animation for the 3 different parts. Shown below is how I break it down, green=slow, purple=fast, blue=repeated.

Pre-Chorus
Oh, whoa
I know that you don't know it
But you're fine, so fine (fine, so fine)
Oh, whoa
Oh girl, I'm gonna show you
When you're mine, oh, mine (mine, oh, mine)

The lyric "Oh, whoa" is a bit slow and long, so I animate it by using path and change the margin of the text. Shown below is the process.

Fig. 1.3, Process work, (Week 4)

After that I started to get on the lyric "
I know that you don't know it But you're" where its a lot faster. For this I mainly used null object, change the size and position of the lyric word by word and change the null position of it according to the words that appears. I also applied easy ease on the animation to make it smoother. The process is then repeated again in a similar way for the lyric "Oh girl, I'm gonna show you When you're" as it have the same beat, however I changed the size and position of it.

Fig. 1.4, Process work, (Week 4)

And for the repeated lyric of "fine, so fine (fine, so fine)" I made a glowing effect that glows according to to when the lyrics was sang. I also added a zoom in effect on the null object when the word "fine so fine" was repeated again. I then repeated the process for the lyric of " mine, oh, mine (mine, oh, mine)".

Shown below is my final personal part that I did (before being combined with my groupmates)

Although we do our seperate parts, we still inform each other of our progress in our group chat, and give each other feedbacks to make a great music video that's consistent.

Shown below is the compiled version of the lyric video.

Exercise 2: Chart Animation

In this task we were given a data to be made into an animation in after effect, each of us is randomly assigned to different kinds of chart, I was assigned to make a donut chart. Shown below is the data that I received.

Fig. 1.6, Data given, (Week 4)

After that, I started to go to After Effects to begin my process. I played with position and the offset for title and the sub-title. For the donut chart itself, I used trim paths and change the percentage of the end accordingly. Shown below is the process of how i do so.

Fig. 1.7, Process work, (Week 4)

Fig. 1.8, Process work, (Week 4)

After that, I added lines that will give the data. I do so by using trim paths in the line, and then make a dot in where I copy pasted the line's trim path into the dot's position. And then for the percentage, I used slider control in effects & preset, and scale it so that it appears a bit to the end of the entire animation. Shown below is the process of how I do so.

Fig. 1.10, Process work, (Week 4)

After that I render it, shown below is the final animation that I made.

Shown below is the Youtube link

Exercise 3: Vector animation

For this exercise Mr. Kannan divided each student a random letter which correlates with different vector images provided, I got the letter D, shown below the the vector image attached to the letter D.

Fig. 1.11, Given vector, (Week 5)

After that, I started to begin my process by first dividing the vectors into separate layers, according to each individual object. For example, I want to animate the human itself, so I bring the human out of the group into a different layer from the rest. I then repeat this process. Shown below are the layers in which I separate.

Fig. 1.12, Process work, (Week 5)

After that, I imported it into after effects to get it animated. I first animate the scale and position of each objects so that it the sofa, plant, and coffee table appears first, and the the rest later. Shown below is the process work.

Fig. 1.13, Process work, (Week 5)

After that, I started to play around with other objects in order to make things more interesting. I used puppet tool in order the make the face nudge up and down, I also use the same technique to animate the plant's leaves.

Fig. 1.14, Process work, (Week 5)

Then, I also used the wiggle tool to make the small decorations on the back move, I purposely seperate some of them and make them wiggle on it's own, while I grouped the others to and make them wiggle as a group to make things more interesting for the viewers. Shown below is the process.

Fig. 1.15, Process work, (Week 5)

Last, I rendered the video. Shown below is the final animation that I made.

Feedback

Week 4: Mr Kannan said that my part of the lyric is nice, it's on beat and you could really feel the song. There is nothing to be changed, all is good.

Week 5: I consulted on the next assignment as this assignment was done on that week (feedback on the other blog)

Reflections

Through out this project, my mind was refreshed on how to use after effect. I am currently taking this module in semester 3.5, and the vector animation along with the donut chart animation was a great reintroduction for After effect before moving on to the main project, which is the music video.

When making the music video, I learned a lot, especially in the use of Null object which came in handy very much. The use of null object opens up my mind on a wider range of how much I could play with position and scale. In addition to that, I also learned on using masks when making the repeated lyric on the line "fine so fine" and "mine oh mine". The making of the lyric video was very fun for me, I learned a lot while still having fun.
