Lectures

Week 5

Lecture 5: Typo_5_Understanding

Letters
  • Uppercase letter forms might seems symmetrical but it's actually not, it have different width.
  • It's a mistake to make a lot of changes to the letter when making a font. It's unique feature should be simple
Maintaining x-height
  • Median line is the line above baseline, all curves should exceed the median line to make it look the same size. Curves letters might appear smaller if it doesn't exceed the median line because it have lesser area touching the median and baseline.

Counterform
  • Counterform: Form outside the letter (including forms outside of the letters when it joins to form a word)

  • Contrast is required to differentiate information

Task 2: Text Formatting and Expression

In this task we were assigned to choose 1 out of the 3 text given and make a layout for it. The layout consisted of 2 pages merged into 1.

Research and Ideation

For this task, I choose the text titled "A Code to Build on and Live by." and "Unite to Visualize a Better World." Below are the references and layouts made.

Fig 2.1 (references), (week 5, 24/10/2024)

I tried to use adobe illustrator for the word "Code" which I used as the title. In adobe illustrator I made the text, create outline, and then cut it out using the knife tool. After that I import it back to adobe indesign.

Fig 2.3 (layout 2), (week 5, 25/10/2024)

For this 2 layouts I emphasize the word code and express it as coding, however realized how the word code doesn't actually relates to coding. So I made another layout which put highlights the word build instead.

Fig 2.4 (layout 3), (week 5, 25/10/2024)

After making this, I felt like I'm not satisfied with the results. So I made another layout from the choices given.

For layout 4 and 5, the word unite was made on adobe illustrator. I first increased the size of "T" alone and used shapes to extend the letter "T", which was then asked by Mr. Vinod to be improvised. So I redid the word unite so that the letter "T" would have the same size as the rest of the letters, and stretched the letter "T" instead of using shapes to extend it.

After receiving feedback on week 6 (refer to Feedback section), I redid the entire layout.

Then on week 7, Mr. Vinod asked me to increase the size of the  title and fix the text a little.

Feedback

Week 6:
  • General feedback: Title is supposed to make things easier, not difficult to read. We need to decide which word to express and how to express it so the focus on the attention is on the word. Not only that, the difference in line length will cause readers to think its not the same text. We should also be aware of rivers on justified text as it breaks reading rhythm.
  • Specific feedback: "Unite" expression could be use however the entire layout looks like islands of texts, it looks like pieces of information are spread, which we don't want as it breaks reading rhythm. "Build" layout could be made better, the idea for the word build could be made better. Both titles for the unite and build needed adjustments as it the title doesn't seems like one title, it seems like 2 pieces of information instead of just one. On top of that, the logotype of unite needed adjustments, the letter "T" should have equal size with the rest of the letters.
Week 7:
  • General feedback: We should avoid using condensed typefaces as it could reduce readability.
  • Specific feedback: The "Unite" title could be made bigger so that it fits the margins. The text I made earlier needs to fit within the margins (within the gutters) as it was outside of it last time.

Reflections

Experience
Working on this layout is very hard for me, as I felt like ideas aren't coming out of my head. I feel like its hard to create a headline that sticks out yet still merge as a whole with the text. I tried to experiment with white spaces but it ended up making islands of text.

Observation
I observe that I became more familiar with indesign application. I also become more familiar with designing a layout as I remembered the rules on how to create one, like for example the rule of thumb.

Findings
I find it hard to come up with ideas for this layout, and to combat this I made another layout from another text given. I also find the feedback given by Mr. Vinod really helpful and very impactful, his feedback really changes my entire layout and design.

Further Reading

Fig 3.1 (Combining typefaces by Tim Brown), (week 6, 1/11/2024)

How to choose the correct typeface:
  • Study different typeface and understand how they convey emotion
  • Read the text and define the tone of it, choose a typeface that can convey it's tone and emotion
  • Try different combination and choose the best match
  • Make sure to choose typeface that increase readability
  • Have an anchor typeface
Purpose of combining typefaces:
  • Creates variety that keeps the readers engage throughout the text
  • Enhance the visual aesthetic of the text
  • Helps readers to focus on the right part
  • Increase communication as combining multiple typeface can help convey the text more clearly
